Shades of Identity: Unveiling Filipino Folk Art Aesthetics
From Tradition to Resistance

This project delves into folk art’s grace,
Filipino aesthetics in their unique embrace.
I’m drawn to their charm, their vibrant play,
In color, line, texture, shape on display.
A visual quest, where these traits shine bright,
Unveils the essence of their distinct light.
Through textures and hues, the patterns unfold,
Aesthetic inquiry in each story told.
As I delve into the Filipino aesthetics’ grand weave,
I witness how foreign threads achieve
A reshaping of our icons’ form,
Blending old roots with cultures warm.
Through time, a unique aesthetic flows,
Merging traditions with what the world bestows.
From Spanish religious icons, revered and old,

To American symbols, in commerce bold,
And subtle hints of Chinese and Japanese grace,

Our icons form a rich, evolving space.
In this vibrant blend, our heritage sings,
A testament to the depth that time brings.

When I think of the beauty we all hold dear,
A connection stirs, strong and clear.
Our values, traditions, and stories old,
Shape the beauty in our hearts we mold.
Ronen with Kant and Heidegger’s glow,
Illuminates our shared path as it flows.
This communal spirit breathes and sings,
Infusing depth and meaning into all things.
Our aesthetics, a mirror of our soul,
In art, in song, in stories told whole.
It’s the language we speak, the design we
adore,
A collective voice, forevermore.

In exploring the vibrant Filipino art’s embrace,

I’m drawn to maximalism’s bold, bright space.
Where every corner bursts with colors grand,
And forms intertwine by a deft hand.

This aesthetic sings of more than visual grace—
It echoes values of community’s face.
Dr. Felipe S. De Leon’s wise decree

Sees in this splendor an emotional spree.
He speaks of exuberance deeply entwined
With a longing to connect, in the heart and mind.
Through vivid hues and forms so wide and true,
Filipino aesthetics’ social essence comes through.

And in the heart of our archipelago’s embrace,
Where storms and shadows have their place,
Our laughter rises, bold and bright,
A beacon through the longest night.
Rozel S. Balmores-Paulino once spoke of our humor,
A tool of resilience in times of upheaval.
An armor forged in the fires of pain,
To laugh, to love, to rise again.
Yet as we weave our stories tight,
And bask in joy’s enduring light,
A people with a heart so vast,
Resilient, joyful, unsurpassed.

In my research, I explore the art we see,
Where power weaves its threads so quietly.
In the shadows of neo-colonial might,
New rulers shape the world in subtle light.
Through capitalism’s lens, they mold the view,
Socio-political control, renewed.
With Berger’s eyes, I trace the path so clear,
Art’s history bent to serve the few in fear.
Elite hands guide what our eyes perceive,
To keep their grasp on power, they deceive.
But in this knowledge, I find the fight,
To challenge those who dictate our sight.
What if we dared to see anew,
To honor the folk, the humble, the true?
What if the songs and crafts of old,
Held the power to challenge the stories we’re told?
In this alternate view, I find my quest,
To uncover voices often suppressed.

Through art that thrives on the margins of fame,
Marginalized souls find their name.
In every thread, in every dance,
Lies a history, a chance to enhance
The tales of struggle, the fight to be seen,
Where culture blooms in shades unseen.
In their words, I find the craft’s true heart,

Each story a piece, each voice a part.
I dive into the past, where history lies,
And trace the impact of colonial ties.
In books, both old and voices new,
I uncover truths that shape our view.
With a camera’s eye, I capture the dance,
Of grassroots art, in every glance.
Each frame, a testament, each scene alive,
The spirit of our folk art, where traditions
thrive.

Among scholars, I share and refine,
The insights gathered, the threads I twine.
In every exchange, the vision grows clear,
The tale of our heritage, held so dear.
I dive into the hues and lines,
Where Filipino folk art intertwines,
Each shape, each stroke, a tale untold,
Not just tradition, but defiance bold.
Society’s mirror, a tool for change,
Art as commentary, in every range.
“Shades of Identity” seeks to show,
The beauty, the struggle, the truths we know.
And as I trace these lines of pride,
I dream of paths where others stride,
To compare, connect, and see,
How folk art shapes our shared history.
